What is Your Legacy Online?

“It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.”
– Benjamin Franklin

As Chairman of American Apparel during its reorganization, I had a front row seat to the reputation business – the right way to do things and the wrong way to do things.

I founded Marca Global, owner of InternetReputation.com, to be your online advocate. As a former CEO and 35-year media veteran, I’ve seen thousands of businesses and individuals build great reputations, make a comeback, or dig an even deeper hole for themselves.

The simple difference in their approach was professional support.

Marca Global is committed to your right to define and defend yourself online, and our hope is to enable everyone to do that in the digital era.

Some may say you shouldn’t care what others say about you – but let’s get real, there are many times in life when others decide your fate based on your reputation. In this digital era, your digital footprint is your legacy.

With that, you might ask yourself, “How can I be proud of my legacy?”

I propose the following strategy:

1) Act with Integrity

Do what you say you are going to do. This is the first step to building your reputation.

2) Be Considerate

Do good and help others. Make others look and feel good.

3) Overdeliver

Go beyond the expected. The old adage, “under promise and over deliver” applies here.

4) Be Reliable and Consistent

Follow through on your commitments. Reliability and consistency in your actions builds a culture of trust.

5) Act with Decency

Be respectful of others. Place a high premium on inclusive and ethical behavior.

In my next blog post, we’ll look at the top five things you can do in 2017 to build your reputation online.
